This past week, I had the honour of attending General Assembly. For the first time ever, there was a day recognizing all of the amazing camping ministries within The Presbyterian Church, so along with some of my Kintail co-workers and a few more staff from our sister camp, Cairn, I travelled to York University for the event.
For those who don’t know, General Assembly is the annual meeting of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. Churches from all across our country send representatives to vote on and discuss important issues about Church policies and theology.
Our day at General Assembly started off with a quick breakfast before leading the morning worship. It was a great opportunity to remind everyone how joyful and fun worship can be amidst the more serious tone that comes naturally with making important decisions.
After worship, we led a short presentation highlighting all of the excellent work done by the various Presbyterian camps across Canada, before moving into the hallway where we had a booth set up. We spent the rest of our time at the booth, where all the attendees could come and learn more about camping ministries.
My favourite memory from our time there occurred while we were at our booth, right before General Assembly reconvened after lunch. We were singing camp songs with the Cairn staff to exchange songs that were unique to the different camps, and a few of the people attending joined in. Eventually, more and more people came over until there was a large circle all singing songs together. I distinctly remember some of the people who joined in talking about how they remembered songs from when they were a kid, and how happy it made them to hear the songs again.
The experience is one that will live with me for a long time, and I’m so grateful that we had the opportunity to share the amazing work that Kintail and all the other Presbyterian camps do throughout the country with everyone in attendance.
