Volunteers of Kintail (VOK)
Volunteers of Kintail (VOK) is a long-standing program and a meaningful part of the camp experience. VOK offers an opportunity to give back to the Kintail community while earning community service hours that count toward high school graduation requirements.
Youth ages 14–16, or campers who are 13 and turning 14 within the calendar year, are eligible to enroll for week-long or 3 night VOK sessions during the summer.
Volunteers of Kintail takes work and effort! Talk to your camper and help ensure they understand the differences between a standard week of camp and how VOK will look!
How many hours will my camper earn?
Campers earn 24 community service hours for completing a full week in the VOK program (Sunday to Friday).
What do VOKs do to earn their hours?
VOKs contribute to the daily life and upkeep of camp. Responsibilities include setting tables and doing dishes for every meal, as well as assisting with morning work projects such as:
Moving and stacking wood
Working in the garden
Painting cabins
Supporting other maintenance and stewardship projects around camp
A sample weekly schedule is provided to families to show how work, rest, and activities are balanced throughout the week.
What camp activities do VOKs get to enjoy?
VOKs continue to experience camp alongside their volunteer work. Each day includes:
Faith, Learning, and Sharing each morning
Beach time every afternoon
A camp activity each evening
On Thursday evening, the group enjoys a choice activity, which may include returning to Arts and Crafts, extra beach time, archery, or another group-selected activity with their counsellors.
Why is there a fee if this is a volunteer program?
Although VOKs contribute valuable work, participants are still campers under the age of 18 and are fully supervised by Kintail staff. VOKs receive meals, participate in activities, and require appropriate staffing and care throughout the week. The VOK fee reflects these costs and is discounted compared to a regular week of camp.
How do campers receive documentation for their hours?
At sign-out, each VOK is provided with a letter documenting their completed community service hours, which can be submitted directly to their school.
