This picture was from the 2007 Staff Commissionin Day. The picture is of myself (Shawn Bates) and Colin Barron speaking about our deep friendship while dedicating a tree in honour of “Senior Co-ed 1991”. The tree is in the south-west corner of the Celebration Tree Garden.
Colin and I met during that summer but didn’t really become close friends until after camp. We would travel by train between London and Sarnia to visit each other whenever possible, or by plane between London and Edmonton. We are as close as brothers and have lived together while in college/university in Toronto. We have spent summers at Kintail with our sister’s kids at Family Camp, sharing our love of camp with them. I was honoured to be a member of Colin’s wedding party in 2006. No matter the distance, we will always be the best of friends thanks to Kintail.
I was told that after our speach there were a number of staff in tears and touched by our words. I know that there are many others who have the same sort of stories from Kintail. It speaks volumes for the power of camping at Kintail.

Shawn and I have a decades long friendship that started at Kintail, and I am sure most campers and staff can say the same for at least one person they have met through their years as a Kintailer. It really is a special place.
